The Long Wait

This is the portrayal of the nayika, dressed in finery, waiting for her lover to come. She is adorned with the sixteen shringar (solah shringar) which are traditionally considered to evoke passion in a man. In her hair she wears jasmine flowers, the fragrance of which will arouse his desire. In India, jasmine is considered to be an aphrodisiac. She wears head ornaments and large earrings. A pearl string falls tantalizingly on her bare breast. The tinkle of her anklets and her green bangles will captivate his hearing.

Seated on her haunches, every curve of her body is accentuated. The provocative pose of her body with her arm going seductively across her body is enough to arouse desire. The tilt of her head and downcast eyes is curious mix of seductive appeal and innocent charm. The vermilion of the body encased within the black of her lower garment and the black cascading hair stand out beautifully against the green background.
